About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Your Orientation will take place on the first day and you will be given a welcome pack. You will work alongside your allocated Assessor or Supervisor
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
An Assessor and Supervisor will be assigned to you prior to you commencing your placement.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Long days 07:00- 19:30, 3 shifts per week
Service runs over a 7 day week which will include weekends
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Care of patients with both long term and short term conditions requiring intravenous therapy or subcutaneous hydration in both clinic and Domiciliary settings.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper- Logan-Tierney model of nursing
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
-Record physiological observations and calculate the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2) effectively and gain awareness of the escalation process within the community setting
-Effective Communication skills
-Teamworking within the wider MDT
-Venepuncture, Cannulation Skills
-ANTT, Infection Prevention and Control
-Preparation of IV Medications
-Holistic Care planning, record keeping, risk assessment
-Knowledge of the different Intravenous medications that can be used in a community setting, side effects and uses
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
-Care of different vascular Access devices e.g. PICC, midline, Portacath
– Vascular access complications and troubleshooting
-Medications Management, drug calculations, maintaining safety
-Cellulitis assessment and pathway
-Observation of Picc/ Midline removal
-Observation of line dressing changes, use of stabilization devices e.g. Statlock

Regular Audits carried out
RCN Guidelines and local policies followed to ensure safe and effective practice
