About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
As soon as you have been allocated a Synergy ward at MRI please email Pef.team@mft.nhs.uk to introduce yourself (please include a note of which ward you are allocated to and when your placement starts). The PEF team can answer any questions you may have regarding Synergy, the hospital in general and parking. If you would like to meet with the PEF Team before you start your placement they would be happy to arrange this.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07:30 – 15:30
Late:
13:30 – 21:30
Night:
21:00 – 08:00
Shift Notes:
Break entitlement is as follows:
Short shift (7.5 hours) = 1 x 30 minute break
Long day (13 hours) = 2 x 30 minute breaks
Night shift (11 hours) = 1 x 60 minute break

What nursing model is used for planning care?
What resources are available to help students learning?
We have a student nurse resource file on the ward that all students have access to. Information in the folder includes spoke placements that students can go on whilst on placement.
Spoke Placements
We have a number of specialist nurses who see patients on the wards including urology specialist nurses, upper GI nurses, colorectal specialist nurses and pathway co-ordinators. A number of our patients see the physiotherapist and occupational therapists.
Students are encouraged to spend time with other healthcare professionals and when on placement we will guide students and support them when they are booking spoke placements.
Additional Information
Ward 11 (Male) and Ward 12 (Female) are general surgical wards, patients are admitted before surgery and are also transferred after surgery..
We specialise in Upper GI, Colorectal, HPB, General Surgery.
We have a zero tolerance policy on aggressive or abusive behaviour in order to maintain a pleasant environment for both patients and the staff.
There is a staff break room, with a fridge and microwave facilities
We have a cloak room, unfortunately we do not currently have locker facilities for students therefore we ask that students do not bring valuables to placement.
