About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

As soon as you have been allocated a Synergy ward at MRI please email Pef.team@mft.nhs.uk to introduce yourself (please include a note of which ward you are allocated to and when your placement starts). The PEF team can answer any questions you may have regarding Synergy, the hospital in general and parking.  If you would like to meet with the PEF Team before you start your placement they would be happy to arrange this.

At MRI we have two wards dedicated to the care of older people Ward 45 and 46. Both wards have been awarded the prestigious Quality mark for Elder Friendly wards and in 2017, Ward 45 was named the Trusts “Most Improved Ward,” and we are very proud to achieve Gold in their Accreditation.

Ward 45 cares for elderly female patients with a wide variety of Acute Medical and Long Term conditions. Many of the patients we care for are living with Dementia and we are passionate about ensuring our ward environment is calm, therapeutic and support the needs of people who are frail or have cognitive impairment. The team are passionate about “Ending PJ Paralysis,” and together with our team of Therapeutic Activity Coordinators we ensure that our patient’s days are filled with meaningful and therapeutic activities such as Music and Film group sessions, Arts and Crafts and Reminiscence Time. The team has embraced the MFT’s “What Matters to Me,” work and used it to ensure we find out what is most important to our patients, get to know them well and support them to be involved in all decisions about their care. We believe carers are key partners in care, and as such we are signed up to John’s Campaign. We are committed to use a person centred approach in all we do and always “Remember the Person.”

Our Nursing team works alongside our community and therapy teams to ensure all the appropriate support is provided to our patients on discharge to avoid avoidable harm or readmission to hospital. Our Elderly Care consultants provide strong clinical leadership and alongside our team of ANPs they work closely with the Acute Frailty Network to develop our service to ensure continuous improvement in care of the Older Person.

Many of our patients have their care, treatment and discharge planned under the Mental Capacity Act so our Nurses develop advanced knowledge and expertise in applying the MCA in practice. This allows our team to ensure our patients are safeguarded appropriately, and we are able to effectively support those who lack capacity to make decisions about their care.
