About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Orientation of establishment. Student information pack is given. Given a named mentor/Associate mentor.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Where possible the student will meet their mentor on the first day.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.30am – 2.30pm
Late:
1.30pm – 9.00pm
Night:
8.45pm – 7.45am
Shift Notes:
Hours are generally Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Child development. Immunisations. Family support. Baby massage. Antenatal Care. Child Protection. Breast Feeding Support.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Framework and Assessment for children in need and their families. Health needs assessment.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Communication skills. The development of Therapeutic relationships with clients/families. Record keeping. In depth awareness of child development/Assessment of health needs. Liaison with the primary health care team. Applying research to practice.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
The health visiting service in Bury is committed to enabling clients to achieve, through informed choice, the or optimum level of health according to their individual needs, by providing appropriate advice, support, information or referral on an individual or group basis; this is achieved through effective health promotion and health education, using a multi-disciplinary approach.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Community health care journals. Internet. Up to date NMC documentation. Nursing and midwifery books.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Breast feeding working party is currently working towards obtaining Unicef baby friendly status. Undertaking the national health Chlamydia screening.

A range of spoke placements relevant to the clinical practice placement are available. The students are given an extensive list of placements and contact numbers at the beginning of their placement.
