0800-1600 Mon-Fri term time

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Medication administration including buccal and  injections. Enteral feeding and tracheostomy care. Management of epilepsy and asthma. Assessment and management of a sick child. Observation of other health disciplines’ e.g. medical staff, podiatry, orthoptist, ophthalmologist, dentist, psychiatrist, physio, occupational therapist, dietitian and speech and language therapist.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Observations e.g. weight, (including wheelchair dependent child), height, t,p,r, bp. Medication administration. Communication skills including use of PECS, signing and other communication aids.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Spoke Placements

Millwood primary school, children with disabilities social work team ( most relevant to students undertaking combined nursing social work degree), Cambeck Close respite facility, and childrens’ community nursing team.

Additional Information

The experiences available at Elms Bank Specialist Arts College are never ending! Students will have the opportunity to experience the multi-disciplinary working that takes place to support families where a child has complex health needs. Students will also be able to spend time with teaching staff, so they are aware what additional skills are required to support these children in an educational setting.
