About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

The student will have access to a desktop computer and working area

Shown how to access policies and procedures in accordance with Community Services Bury, Northern Care Alliance (Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)

Allocated a mentor/assessor/practice teacher

Introduction to the Whitefield health visiting and school nursing teams

To access evidence based practice research articles e.g. NICE guidelines, Department of Health (DOH) guidelines, Healthy Child Programme.

The student will be shown the local area, clinics and children’s centres

Support organising alternative practice hours where applicable (health visiting students only)

To work alongside practice teacher (health visiting students only)

Pre- registration students will be assigned an assessor and supervisors

To sort out identification badge (health visiting students only)

To obtain work mobile phone (health visiting students only)

A timetable for the days in practice

Discussion of practice portfolio (health visiting students)

Development of Leadership skills

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

The organisation provides training to practice staff to support a wide variety of learners/students

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

Notes: 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Healthy Child Programme and care packages according to needs of the child/family

Well baby clinics

8-12 Month developmental assessments and 24-30 month assessments conducted in health centres and children’s centres.

Working with the multidisciplinary team

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Follow the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation with a person centred approach tailored according to need

Spoke Placements

Within the student placement book there is a list of all relevant spoke placements.

All of the spoke areas have been selected due to their public health remit and to enhance an a students learning in relation to community profiling, understanding the Child Health Profile and key performance indicators for Health Visiting.

Please note:-  if you have a child in the catchment area of this Health Visiting or School Nursing team you may not be able to attend due to a conflict of interests, please email Barbara Henning in the Clinical Placements Unit asap to clarify.

Notes: Students are not expected to wear uniform on the placement and it is advised that students read the uniform policy prior to starting the placement.

Lots of opportunities on site to arrange alternative practice hours for example, speech and language therapy, audiology, orthoptist, community dental team, community nursery nurses, clinics, dermatology, pharmacists.

Child development centre at Fairfield General Hospital

School Nurses, continence team, social workers, physiotherapy, dieticians, specialist health visitors for children with complex needs and disabilities

To attend MARAC Meetings if appropriate (book in advance)

Spend time with Bury MASH Team for additional safeguarding experiences

Attend lunch time learning sessions
