About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students are welcome to make contact 2-3 weeks prior to placement to arrange an informal visit or receive their off duty/shift patterns.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Allocated prior to the first day of placement.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

7am – 3pm

Late:

1.30pm – 9.30 pm

Night:

9pm – 7.30am

Shift Notes:

Generally, students work a mixture of earlies and late shifts Monday – Friday. However, should a student wish to work night duty or at weekend this can be negotiated.

We are NOT able to facilitate long days for students under any circumstances.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

24 Hour Care Inpatient Unit (IPU) (12 beds)

Hospice at Home (H@H) Service

Wellbeing Centre (WBC) services and groups (as deemed appropiate by the WBC team)

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Communication, Personal care, Multi-Disciplinary Team Input and Discharge planning, Peer Support, Palliative & end of life symptom management, syringe driver management, pain assessment and control.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Palliative/End of Life care, Therapeutic touch, Bereavement support, Use of hoist as bathing aid. Care of/respect for the deceased person and their loved ones, Holistic Care.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Books, Journals, Access to any planned study days, Limited computer access, Access to MDT.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

• IPOS (Integrated Palliative Care Outcome Score)
• The ongoing development of the ‘Dementia Hub’ within our Wellbeing Centre.
• Ongoing development of the new Wellbeing Centre including patient focused groups to target specific audiences.

Additional Information

The Hospice is an independent Registered Charity. Meals can be ordered on site before 11am, payable at the time of ordering. There is also Café K onsite to purchase light lunches and hot beverages. Free car parking is available.
