What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student is allocated 2 mentors to work with. Dr Chesney also keeps in touch throughout the placement as adviser/supporter.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7:30am – 3:30pm
Late:
01:00pm – 09:00pm
Night:
08:30pm – 07:45am

Springhill Hospice is as flexible as possible when supporting students on placement – please discuss with Mentor/Placement Co-ordinator.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
All aspects of palliative care on the inpatient Unit, time spent in Day Hospice and visits to assess patients at home/hospital.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Patient assessment, skin integrity, oral hygiene, infection control, pain and symptom control, care planning, care of dying patients and families, last offices, moving and handling.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Pain and symptom management, MDT meetings, ward management under supervision, Day Hospice, Hospital visits, integrated care pathways, 24 hour advice time complementary therapies.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Link nurses for infection control and skills of all clinical staff, Mentorship/Preceptorship. MDT with community, Medical Director and Medical Teams knowledge and skills.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Resident Project Nurse, introduction of 24 hour advice line, intergrated care pathways.
