About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
On your first day the student will be shown around the ward and given a Welcome Book which contains information about the placement. If you wish to visit the ward prior to your start date then please e-mail Susan Fletcher.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
There is a separate off duty (this is a list of the days you are working on placement and who you will be working with) for student nurses. On this list is the name of your mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Students can work a mixture of early and late shifts or they can work three long days which are a combined early and late shift. Night duty is also available if required by the student.
Notes: On the Student Off Duty is the name of your mentor. Off duty is negotiated between the student and the mentor as the student must work a minimum of 40% of their time with their mentor. If you need your off duty before starting on placement please contact Susan Fletcher. All students are expected to work some weekends to ensure they have full experience of the cycle of care.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
This is a Female Stroke Rehabilitation Unit.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Physiological observations e.g. recording BPs, Temperatures etc.
Skin care and assessment of the skin condition
Assessment of hygiene needs and assistance required to ensure rehabilitation.
Assessment of mobility and safety
Assessment of mental capacity and referrals where appropriate
Medicine management
Injection technique
Care of Intravenous infusions and blood transfusions
Urinary catheterisation and after care
Infection Control Techniques
Barrier Nursing
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Care of Naso Gastric Tubes and PEGs
Discharge Planning for complex cases
What resources are available to help students learning?
Internet and Intranet access and also Wifi
On site library
Free hospital transport to allow students to attend spokes on other sites.
