About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

An introduction into many surgical specialities such as general surgery, ENT, facial/maxillary, gynaecology, urology, orthopaedic surgery.  Students can learn to admit using DSU documentation and Evolve, supervisors and assessors will work with students to provide pre and post-operative care and nurse led discharge.  Work with members of MDT, exposure to drug administration, spokes to theatre and pre-op.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Assigned to students prior to placement commencing, each student will have supervisor and assessor, off duty will be arranged so that students work with one of these.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Admit and prepare for theatre.

Recover patients from GA

Wound care and opportunities to participate in ANTT

To follow post- operative instructions, arranging follow up care, community wound care referrals, physiotherapy etc.

To assess post-operative pain and nausea, to administer therapies under supervision.

Hydration, nutrition and IV fluid therapy.

To assess for post-operative complication and be aware of Escalation protocols relating to deteriorating patient.

Infection Control, ethical issues relating to capacity and consent.

Communication skills to assess, psychological support, patient education, liaison with the MDT.

Medicines management/preparing TTOs

IV fluid administration

Following NICE guidelines and British Association of Day Surgery protocols to ensure safety of all patients undergoing day surgery.

To continually practice within NMC guidelines

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Nutritional assessment, falls risk, mobility, pressure area risk assessment, VTE documentation, exposure to clients with learning disability and mental health conditions.

We are expanding the range of specialities that are undertaken and continually updating our existing knowledge utilizing current research/evidence based practice.  Students are welcome to attend any available teaching sessions/resources.

Additional Information

We welcome and support all students, we are currently awaiting a permanent location for the DSU, we share ward 12 with endoscopy and 23 hour ward.  We are a green area, students do not require fit testing, they may obtain lateral flow tests on arrival to the placement if they wish. We ask that they use Green in-patient lift/stairs and change into uniform on the unit and prior to leaving.
