About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
A Welcome pack is sent out prior to starting the placement.
4 weeks of placement are organised with 1 day a week with each of the 4 specialist nurses looking at different areas within cardiology, then the 5th day is spent on Spoke placement.
The final 2 weeks are arranged in conjunction with the student to accommodate if they have identified any specific areas of interest that they would like to concentrate on in their final 2 weeks.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
The student will be assigned 1 mentor and assessor, the other team members will also have input.

Start work 8.30-16.30 can be negotiated to fit in with the specialist nurse.

- NIBP Chest auscilatations
- ECG interpretation (normal vs abnormal)
- Recognition of Atrial Fibrillation
- Assessment of the cardiac patient
- Differences in cardiac diagnosis and treatment plans
- Cardiac care pathways
- Medication used to treat and stabilise cardiac conditions
- Planning care for cardiac patients
- Monitoring and evaluation of actions and patient status
- End of life care in cardiac patients
- Communication skills
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Haemodynamic monitoring
- ECG monitoring and interpretation of normal and abnormal
- ECG Rhythm recognition and what rhythms constitute an emergency
- Assessment of cardiac chest pain and actions to be taken
- Awareness of cardiac procedures including observation and follow up care that needs to be maintained i.e cardiac bypass, ICD, CRT, angiogram and angioplasty, cardioversion ETT testing, Echo.
