About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students should ensure that they have their assessment documentation available on commencement of the placement.
It is also helpful if the student has some idea of what they would personally like to achieve during their time with us.
The department has an orientation and welcome package for students. This introduces them to the department team and various related areas of the hospital.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will meet their allocated assessor at the commencement of their placement. They are allocated a mentor if they wish.

The department hours are 37.5 per week starting at 08.30 and finishing at 16.45, this is inclusive of a 3/4 hour lunch break. However, these hours are flexible and an alternative may be arranged by contacting the placement contacts on 0161 7053533.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Play and distraction, observations (temp, pulse, respiration, BP), weights, heights, head circ measurement, peak flow, spirometery, bronchial lability index, BM/HBA1C measurement, specimen collection, assisting with venepuncture, administration of immunisation, assisting with venepunture, aseptic technique, administration of enema, entinox and botox.

What resources are available to help students learning?
Each student is given the opportunity to tailor their placement according to their individual needs by discussion with assessor. The department dedicates Tuesday pm to multi professional teaching. The staff has also compiled an education draw.
The unit has an active education team which organises regular teaching on a variety of topics. There is a designated student information board with articles of interest selected for students.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The unit encourages all staff to be involved in promoting research-based practice. Our unit is part of the North West Paediatric Benchmarking Group that strives to identify and implement best practice. The department takes part in research trials in areas such as eczema and diabetes.
