About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Area available for students in the Theatre Setting. Arrangements on arrival in Theatre, each will receive a booklet informing them of the theatre and Medical staff in each speciality. The booklets also contain a brief overview of all the specialities.

Shift Notes:

4 day week 8am – 6pm with mentor if possible late duty 12noon – 9pm on request to observe emergency procedures.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

What nursing model is used for planning care?

No specific Nursing models used in Theatre or in Recovery.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Induction and Reversal of Anaesthesia
  • Scrubbing and intra-operative techniques
  • Circulating for operating sessions
  • Care of the unconscious patient
  • Recovery

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Chronic pain procedures, Laparoscopic procedures, Pain relief procedures e.g. epidural P.C.A.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Internet in all Theatres, Teaching packs, Journals a small amount of medical books.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

All practice is research based, a research board is kept updated.

The Theatre is a very exciting place to work with dedicated staff. The staff are friendly and approachable and students are always supervised. We take Paramedic and other services as students and offer a wide range of interesting procedures and specialities.
