About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Critical Care Ward welcome booklet & orientation of ward
First 2 weeks completed off duty and the rest of placement shifts to be arrangement and agreed with Mentor.
Access to Ward Manger, Practice Educator, and PEL
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors allocated prior to commencement of placement. Student may ring 2 weeks in advance for information for shifts and name of mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.30 – 15.30 Break 30 mins
Late:
12.30 – 20.30 Break 30 mins
Night:
20.00 – 08.00 Break 1hr & 30 mins
Shift Notes:
If required one Long Day a week can be requested 07.30 – 20.30 Break 30mins x2. This needs to be authorised by PEL Sr Wilcox or Manager Andrew Dodman and agreed by the Mentor allocated.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
ICU and HDU level patients
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Ward ICU model of nursing is used, loosely based on Roper Logan & Tierney. A – E assessment can also be used.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Assessment of the acute/critically ill patient utilising a structured approach (A-E assessment)
Fundamental patient care – eye care, oral care, skin care
Patient observations including fluid balance
Tissue viability- use of the SKIIN Bundle
Nutritional assessment (use of MUST)
Providing nutrition Enteral/parenteral to meet the needs of the patient
Communication skills – complex communication with the patient, family and MDT (Medical staff, Physiotherapist, dietician, pharmacist).

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Exposure to the interpretation of blood results
Invasive Line care
Exposure to the care of a patient with advanced respiratory support, tracheostomy, NIV, mechanical ventilation
Exposure to advanced renal support
What resources are available to help students learning?
Internet and Intranet access and also Wifi
On site library
Free hospital transport to allow students to attend spokes on other sites.

Can arrange own relevant Spoke Placement with agreement with mentor.
