What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Introduction to mentors

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

To work with their student two long days out of three or four short shifts out of five short shifts.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

07.30am – 15.30pm

Late:

12.30pm – 20.30pm

Night:

20.00pm – 08.00am

Shift Notes:

Long Days:- 7.30am – 20.30pm

Students who work three long days per week will only have worked 36 hours not the required 371/2 hours. Student must negotiate with their mentor to make up the remaining 11/2 hours otherwise the student will not have completed enough hours at the end of the placement which will prevent them being signed off

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Acute Medical – sepsis/pneumonia/falls? Cause/delirium/cancer/alcohol excess and associated conditions/spinal cord compression/Diabetes and related conditions.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Must be appropriate to the level of training of the student and to meet the required NMC outcomes.

Medication Management

ANNT

Changing medical dressings

Positioning and maintenance of female urinary catheters. Male catheterisation is a post qualified skill.

Care of Central Lines

ECGs

Risk Assessments e.g. MUST and referral route.

Admission and Discharge documentation and planning

Communication skills both verbal and non-verbal with patients, carers, relatives and professionals

Prime and connect I.V. fluids after an appropriately trained person has flushed the cannula (student nurses to work only with 0.9%Sodium Chloride,5%Glucose or Hartman’s Solution)

Recording Physiological observations e.g. recording Blood pressure which patient is receiving a blood transfusion.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Insertion and maintenance of Naso Gastric Tubes.

Naso Gastric Feeding

Feeding via a PEG

Management of a PEG

Management of a Tracheostomy.

Management of Nephrostomy

Additional Information

The ward is a very active area with the majority of patients being highly dependent. Please ask for help if you are feeling lost and unsure. Our aim is to ensure your placement is enjoyable and meets you learning needs. You will develop skills and knowledge through patient care, documentation, assessment and being involve in multi-disciplinary meetings.

Off duty is prepared and available if you phone two weeks before your start date however off duty can be negotiated within reason therefore you may do an early on your first day then negotiate your off duty with your mentor.
