About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students are oriented to the unit and receive a booklet introducing them to CCU. The booklet lists some objectives they may wish to achieve. All students have a named mentor. We offer spoke placements with cardiac rehabilitation nurses (Oldham) and can arrange days for students to visit Silver Heart Unit (Fairfield) to see Angiograms and pacemaker insertion
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are advised to either e-mail Clare Smith or ring the ward directly to find out your named mentor and initial off-duty.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07:30-15:30
Late:
12:30-20:30
Night:
20:00-08:00

Please be aware students are only able to do night shifts if their named mentor is also on nights. When we have more than one student at one time, we expect students to avoid doing the same shifts as each other (within reason), as we are only a small unit.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
CCU is a 5 bedded unit, offering level 2 Critical Care facilities with the speciality of cardiac issues.
This is an acute clinical setting dealing with admissions from A & E and other wards within the hospital, for issues such as arrythmia’s /heart failure/myocardial infarction/post cardiac arrest (not requiring ventilation),and repatriation from our Tertiary Centres (MRI and WYTHENSHAWE) post Primary PCI.
We are able to provide cardiac and invasive monitoring, CPAP (respiratory treatment for heart failure), temporary pacemakers, pericardiocentesis, specialist cardiac drugs amongst other things.
We often manage deteriorating and critically ill patients as well as those who are more stable but require close observation

12 Lead ECG recording
Practicing/Utilising multiple methods of drug administration

Non- Invasive and Invasive monitoring
Fluid Balance management/ Diabetes management
All vital basic nursing care
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
The opportunity to be involved in cardiac arrest situations, observation of procedures e.g. Central and arterial line insertion, CPAP, temporary pacemaker insertion, pericardiocentesis.
Preparing patients for pacemaker insertions, angiograms.
Admitting patients from A & E and other hospitals, using evolve system

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Cardiology are regularly involved with research trials, however the Clinical Research nurses deal with this aspect, and visit regularly to recruit patients to studies.
