What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Allocated on the student’s first shift to ensure the student has a first meeting with their mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.30 – 15.30
Late:
12.30 – 20.30
Night:
20.00 – 08.00
Shift Notes:
Long Day 07:30am to 20:30pm but students who only do long days will have to work one Early shift every four weeks to ensure they have worked enough hours.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Patients present with orthopaedic conditions caused by an accidents (trauma patients)
Patients come into the ward to have planned operations (list patients)
Patients come in with chronic conditions e.g. T.B joints (where T.B has infected the joint)
Palliative care patients and cancer patients requiring prophylactic nailing to joints.
Occasionally patients require amputation due to infection.
Patients come in for corrective surgery e.g. congenital malformations of joints
Many of the trauma patients present with vast comorbidities.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Fundamentals of care e.g. assisting patients with hygiene needs.
Recording physiological measurements e.g. blood pressure
Admission documentation
Working with the Trauma co-ordinator to prepare patients for e.g. surgery.
Complex discharge planning
Moving and Handling of complex mobility patients
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Spinal Injury Patients
There is a dedicated team of Orthogeriatricians who plan care to deal with the problems of ageing and its effect on the mobility etc.
What resources are available to help students learning?
There is a Resource room
Several computers throughout the ward; temporary computer access can be given to any student
Books and journals
On site library
Free hospital transport to allow students to attend spokes on other sites.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Several audits are regularly carried out.

This is a large orthopaedic department offering a wide range of experience for all levels of student nurse training.
The patient population covers all adult age groups and genders.
Students have the opportunity to develop a large number of skills which they can take to other specialisms
