About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are orientated to AMU, provided with an induction booklet. They will be introduced to their mentors and associate mentors and provided with off duty.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be allocated shifts with their mentor or associate mentor when possible. Any other shifts students will be allocated to another member of staff before the shift.

Students will be expected to work 37.5 hours per week. The shift patterns are early, late, long day and nights.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
This is a 50 bedded medical assessment unit with the capacity for an additional 8 patients in our rapid assessment clinic.
We have two short stay bays for patients with 24 – 48 length of stay in hospital.
The rest of the unit is made up of 4 acute bays, taking admissions from A & E and GPs.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
At the present time we do not currently use a nursing model
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Initial triage of patients
- Assessment of acutely ill patients and administer initial treatments.
- Evaluate care given
- Escalation of treatment to a higher level of care i.e. – HDU / ITU
- Safe discharge of patients, liaising with family, social workers and other members of the MDT
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Triage
- Rapid assessment and implementation of care of the acutely ill patient
- Evaluation of care and further patient management.
- Management of a 50 bedded unit

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The unit has currently undergone a large change with the expansion from a 26 bedded unit to a 50 bedded unit.
We are currently trialing a rapid assessment clinic for up to 8 patients

The AMU aims to provide a high quality holistic multi disciplinary service to those patients who will require medical and nursing intervention with close relations with other professionals to ensure continuity of secondary and primary care.
