About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be introduced to their assessor and orientated to the ward.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are allocated a mentor prior to commencement of the placement and are encouraged to work the same or similar duties to their mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.30am – 3.30pm
Late:
1.30pm – 9.30pm
Night:
9.15pm – 7.45am

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for patients suffering from myocardial infarction, congestive cardiac failure, post-angiogram, post pacemaker insertion, and all general medical conditions.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
A mixture of Roper, Logan and Tierney, and Henderson’s.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Caring for patients following insertion of pacemakers, angiograms, trans oesophageal echo, cardio version and the care of patients in the acute stages of myocardial infarction. Exercise tests and tilt tests.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
What resources are available to help students learning?
Learning packs, books. Able to spend time in CCU, angiogram suite at Rochdale, with the heart failure nurse, cardiac rehabilitation nurse. Master screen for telemetry
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Plans to look at care pathways. Appointment of consultant nurse in cardiology

Philosophy of Care
The ward staff on F8 aim to provide a high standard of nursing care to all patients in need of hospitalisation. Working together with the MDT i.e. Doctors, specialist nurses, cardiology department, physios, OTs, dieticians, speech therapists, community nurses, we aim to meet patients needs whilst in hospital and adequately prepare and meet patients needs upon discharge.
Support to patients families and carers will be provided. However, information regarding patients can only be divulged to relatives and carers with the consent of the patient.
