About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Introduction to mentor and associate mentor. Students are orientated to the ward. Initial interview as per documentation with named mentor/ associate mentor.
Students are introduced to the team. Student introduction pack is given.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are allocated to a team of nurses on the off duty, when the student allocation list is available. The student will work alongside their mentor/associate mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07:30 – 15:30
Late:
13:30 – 21:30
Night:
21.15 – 07.45

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
During placements students will be faced with various learning opportunities, most of which are available on the ward. Spoke placements are available to give students an insight into different departments such as Chemotherapy out patients.
Students are encouraged to be involved in all patient care situations from basic needs to end of life care.
They are encouraged to provide a holistic approach to nursing care with supervision, including physical needs and psychological needs.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan, and Tierney model of nursing.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Administration of blood products
- Administration of platelet transfusion
- Care of neutropenic patients
- Observation of bone marrow biopsies
- Observation of care and the use of Hickman Lines
- Observing administration of intravenous chemotherapy
- Holistic nursing care: – use of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills.
- Documentation and charting recordings.
- Importance of reporting findings and understanding results
- Understanding of medication and documentation

Philosophy of Care
It is our ultimate aim to provide all patients on F11 with a high standard of care, treating everyone as individuals and caring for them in a holistic manner.
We aim to meet all patients needs whilst in hospital and adequately prepare and patients needs upon discharge.
We also aim to provide support and guidance for relatives and friends whilst maintaining patient confidentiality.
We have a committed and professional multi-disciplinary team who are always approachable and happy to help to ensure all patients have a safe and comfortable stay in hospital.
