About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
IT access is arranged by the PEF Team e-mail PEF.Team@pat.nhs.uk.
Students are orientated to the unit area and introduced to all staff.
Fire and basic life support procedures are explained.
Students will spend their first day with their allocated mentor who will discuss placement outcomes and learning opportunities that are available during their stay in the pre op clinic.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student will be allocated an assessor, but will work with other nurses within the department allocated by their assessor.

Day shifts 7.45- 16.45.
Half day 7.45-12.45
Notes: pre op clinic hours are 07.45-16.45 with one half day 7.45-12.45.

What nursing model is used for planning care?
Pre-operative assessment guidelines (NICE)
A number of trust protocols and policies for the care of pre operative patients.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Advanced listening and communication skills, individual/team work, hand hygiene, infection prevention and control, urinalysis/pregnancy testing, height, weight, BMI, clinical observations including manual BP where needed.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Additional Information
During this placement you will have full support of all nurses and staff on the unit.
You will have exposure to Sleep apnoea protocol, Pressure ulcer risk assessment, Learning disabilities patients and their care pre operatively including the use of Traffic Light assessment and referrals, Care of the dementia patient for surgery and the This Is Me document and referrals, Obese patient protocol, care of the anaemic patient needing surgery, Pre operative diabetic pathway, care of low BMI patients and exposure to the anaesthetic assessment clinic every Tuesday.
