About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will be allocated their assessor/supervisor on PARE. First 2 weeks of off duty pre- arranged in order for initial meeting to be completed. All requests we will try to meet. Orientation to environment and team members.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Pre allocated by PEL and informed by email. We aim to ensure that students work with either their assessor or supervisor on their first shift.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

Late:

Night:

20.00- 08.00

Shift Notes:

Early:  07:30 – 15:30

Late:   12:30- – 20:30

Night:  20:00 – 08:00

Days: 07:30 – 20:30

Long day

Notes: 3 x LD = 36 hours

Students will need to work 1 short shift i.e early / late every 4 weeks to make hours up.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Admissions of emergency gynaecological chronic pain management. Management of early pregnancy complications management of early pregnancy loss. Acute admission of oncology patients.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Assisting patients with personal care, mobility, assessing risks. basic physiological observations preparing patients for theatre, monitoring post op patients. Admissions + discharge of patient’s exposure to sensitive situation relating to early pregnancy complications.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Principles of ANTT Handwashing techniques use of appropriate PPE.

What resources are available to help students learning?

In depth student orientation booklet – specialist nurses in early pregnancy experienced gynaecology

staff trust intranet patents experiences + PBE.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

None at present due to COVID.
