About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will report to the Sisters Office, Lucy Pugh Outpatient.
PEL will provide a well come pack and an overview of the structure of the department, be orientated to the placement.
Students will then meet their mentor and a weekly allocation plan given.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students will be allocated a mentor team prior to arrival.

Notes: ½ day on Friday.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Caring for patients suffering from Breast diseases, bowel problems, E.N.T problems, vascular disease with leg ulcer or poor blood supply, any Urological conditions, Bone fracture or any bone related conditions.
Also caring for patients with Blood disorders, cardiac conditions, chest related disease like Asthma, COPD, lung cancer and tuberculosis, diabetes, Gastro enterology diseases like colitis or liver disease, and any general medical conditions.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Nursing models are not utilised – Staff give individualised care.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Physiological observation, observe venepuncture( Blood tests), Urinalysis.
Basic wound dressing or suture removal by following ANTT.
Assisting/ observing minor procedures like Breast Core Biopsy, Fine needle aspiration, Seroma drainage or a Breast implant expansion. Flow test and bladder scan.
Assisting with joint injections.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Follow patient pathway on one stop Breast clinic
Observe: cardiology investigations like: ECG, Echo, Exercise tests, lung function tests.
Observe patient receiving chemotherapy for breast and bowel cancer.
Observation on patient undergoing endoscopy procedures, X-Ray examinations / Scans
Observation on Plaster cast application or bandages
Insight into outpatient booking system and an understanding of patient journey

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Oncology patient participate on Research trial as part of their treatment.

Additional Information

Outpatient will be a great placement for an enthusiastic student to gain and develop knowledge on human anatomy and physiology system. We have an excellent team of staff with specialized clinical skills and work alongside with multidisciplinary team on patient care.
