About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Welcome pack including philosophy of care, which is given on the first day to students. Introduced to mentor and orientated to the department.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students always work 1:1 with their mentor unless they are on annual leave or absent. In which case another named member of staff steps in.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Patients seen as outpatients. A lot of teaching and health promotion is involved.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
There is no specific model used in outpatients although we do admit patients occasionally from clinic and we then use an adapted model of Casey’s incorporating the activities of daily living from Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Linking with the esential skills cluster for pre-registration programme.
- Taking and recording of temperature, pulse, respirations, BP, weight, height.
- Dressing and undressing of babies including nappies.
- Eye care.
- Provision of appropriate food and drink, on occasion.
- Collecting urine and faeces specimens.
- Handwashing.
- Spoke placements are arranged to encompass all core clinical skills for semester 1 and 2 year 1.
- Nutrition across the age continum
- Infection control polocy/handwashing/specimin collection
- Medicines management and outpatients prescription
