About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

The students will have the option to complete their Good clinical Practice training , this allows the student to work under supervision on clinical trials.

The student will gain deeper clinical understanding in Gastroenterology, stroke, parkinsonism, Cancer, diabetes  and HIV. Students are expected to rotate through the different research divisions approximately every two weeks.

There is access to spoke placements, which will need to be negotiated with the mentor.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentor will be assigned as soon we are aware of a student coming. The mentor will carry out the initial, midpoint and endpoint assessment.

A student will be assigned an associate mentor for when they are rotating into the different divisions.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Days: 08am-16:00

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Screening Patients for inclusion into clinical research trials,

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Obtaining informed Consent

Therapeutic relationships, Cannulation and IV therapy, Point of care testing: pregnancy, urinalysis, blood sugars, Gain knowledge of the process of ANTT with regard to the preparation and administration of a trial medication through observation and practical teaching session

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Addition skills will be specific to which research area they working in at the time.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Access to Journal of Advanced Nursing ans Nursing times, Access to the trust Medical library can be arranged.  The student will be encouraged to attend any Trust student training courses

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

The department participates in all aspects of clinical research, *we do not work on phase 1 studies*
