About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Orientation to the department and meeting with supervisor/Assessor , tour of unit, Ward and Theatre.
Information pack provided.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors to work with their student as much as possible
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
8am-6pm x 3, 8am-5.30pm x 1 done over 4 days
Or 8am-5pm x 4 and 8am-12.30pm x1 done over 5 days.
Notes: Shifts can be covered in 4 or 5 days.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Following through of a patient during their appointment and seeing all of the diagnostic tests carried out during this visit.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Care plans are not used but we use a ophthalmology computer system open eyes which they will learn to use.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
ANTT, Handwashing, Infection protection in line with pandemic
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Venepuncture, IV therapy, ANTT, Scrubbing up in theatre.

Educational Library with the ophthalmology unit, Student Nurse Information boards.
