About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Induction programme:

  • Allocation of Practice supervisor and Practice assessor

Ward and spoke placements arranged according to students’ needs.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Practice Education Lead allocate Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor prior to student’s commencement of placement

The unit is open from 7:00 am – 20:00. The students will be doing 8:00-16:00, Monday to Friday. All shifts are allocated within these times. There will be no night shifts.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Day Surgery Unit gives student nurses the opportunity to care for patients having general surgery, urological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, maxilla-facial surgery, vascular surgery, trauma cases.

Specialist Clinics are also being held in the department:

  • Flexible Cysytoscopy Clinic
  • Prostate Biopsy Clinic
  • Bladder Cancer Chemotherapy

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The care given in the unit is based on:

  • Dorothea Orem’s Model of Self Care
  • Integrated Care Pathway for Day Surgery
  • The Rochdale Model of Care

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

The students in Day Surgery Unit can learn:

  • Pre and post-operative assessment of patients’ vital signs and observations, assessment of nursing needs, documentation using Integrated Care Pathway
  • Application of long support stockings, supervised in doing subcutaneous injections, intramuscular injections
  • Communication Skills, IT skills and Team Working

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Students can assist in clinics, assisting surgeons/anaesthetist doing rounds or surgical/anaesthetic reviews.

Doing Learning Scenarios exercise as contributed by the Day Surgery Staff to enhance learning and help develop creative critical thinking will be provided. Written reflections are encouraged in every nursing activity

What resources are available to help students learning?

Resource Room, Computer, Support coming from the Day Surgery Unit manager, Practice Assessor, Practice Supervisor.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

  • Developing in-patient pathway through Day Surgery to beds for overnight stay in the Surgical unit (Oasis Unit for now).
  • Audits regarding post-operative pains, nausea, & vomiting
  • Site Marking
  • Patient Satisfaction
  • Utilisation of the department

Spoke Placements

This will be arranged by PEL

  • Theatres – 8:00-18:00
  • Endoscopy – 8:00-16:00

Additional Information

All Day Surgery Unit staff aims to work focusing on the Northern Care Alliance work values: Patient and people focus, Accountability, Continuous improvement and Respect.

Teamwork is the key for all DSU staff and has a good working relationship, friendly and helpful.  All staff are motivated and supported by their Ward Manager and Clinical Matron and are expected to work alongside the Trust’s standards.

Everybody is expected / encouraged to practice Infection Control, always do handwashing, wearing face masks and from time to time do risk assessments when needed.

A student notice board is always upgraded for students where they can read/update some information e.g. uniform policy, Placement Charter, Guidance for Learners and Placement Educators and some vital information which could assist students in their DSU placement.
