About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

On arrival students will be provided with a welcome booklet, a proposed timetable including details of possible visits that can arranged and training sessions.
Orientation to the department.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

There are several supervisors and assessors within the team and their practice supervisor and practice assessor will be allocated prior to the first day

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Usual hours will be 08:30 – 16:30

Notes:
There may be some variance from this if on a spoke.
The service does cover 7 days so may include occasional weekends

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

The student will work alongside the specialist teams and visit patients in hospital wards and departments. They will experience the communication and assessment required to support the complex management of these patients. They will also experience the support provided to the significant others of these patients including into the bereavement period with the bereavement nursing team.

There may be audits being undertaken, e.g. ambulatory syringe pump, NACEL (National Audit of Care at End of Life), strong opioid patch

Spoke Placements

Extended bereavement spoke with the bereavement nursing team is included as part of placement along with time with End-of-Life education team and Spiritual Care Team
Optional spoke opportunities include: local hospices, community specialist palliative care team, acute oncology service, cancer specialist nurses, discharge/transfer of care teams, coroner’s office/inquest, mortuary.
