About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are asked to contact the unit prior to placement to organise a start date and off duty. They will be advised that uniforms and working shoes must not be worn to placement whilst travelling due to infection control procedures. Lockers and changing facilities are available.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be allocated a mentor but also work with the team who will support learning and provide feedback on progress to the mentor
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Long days 07.00am to 18.30pm
The unit is not open on Sundays and no night shifts are available.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Fresenius Medical Care has been caring for NHS kidney patients in the UK for over 20 years. They are the leading independent provider of renal services working in partnership with the NHS carrying out over 575,000 dialysis treatments a year for almost 4,000 patients, in over 50 clinics across England and Wales. They also supply dialysis products and renal pharmaceutical products to over 10,000 patients’ homes across the UK
The renal unit provides kidney care to adults over 18 years old both male and female

Year 1:
- Exploring ways to deliver compassionate care in dialysis units
- All vital signs – Recording and interpreting pre, intra and post dialysis
- Fluid management and understanding dry weight assessment
- Nutrition and dialysis
- Skin integrity (pressure ulcer prevention)
- Principles of infection control
- Understanding normal kidney function
- Understanding what kidney failure means (physical, lifestyle and psycho-social-emotional effects
- Gain and understanding of dialysis access management
- Awareness of required medications
- Opportunities for working with the inter-professional team
Year 2:
- All above plus
- Gain an understanding of blood results and implication’s for the client
- Gain an understanding of dialysis adequacy
- Demonstrate an understanding of anaemia management
- Demonstrate an understanding of the management of diabetic patients receiving haemodialysis
- Demonstrate an understanding of renal bone disease
- Principles of dry weight assessment and fluid management
- Demonstrate an understanding of the dialysis and cardiovascular risk
- Effects of dialysis on quality of life
- Understanding medications
- Principles of infection control in dialysis units (BBV, MRSA – historical perspective, prevention and management)
Year 3:
- All above plus
- Patient engagement & empowering patients to make choices
- Managing and caring for patients who experience difficulties as a result of their long term condition
- Awareness of the range of renal medications and the need for patient self-medication
- Patient referral to MDT’s and other Specialist Team to manage patients with specific needs & issues
- Roster Management & Workforce Planning
- Patient quality outcome measures
