About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Orientation and key Induction will be completed on first day of placement. Shifts to be worked will be negotiated and agreed with mentor and student added to off duty. Welcome Pack (currently being developed) will be given to student.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentor will be allocated before placement commences.Mentor will work a minimum of 2 LDs or equivalent per week with student. Mentor will provide regular feedback and structured supervision (frequency to be negotiated with student, dependent on need). Initial meeting between mentor and student will take place within first week. Student will also be able to work with other staff and associate mentors where appropriate.

The Nursing staff work Long days (07:30 – 19:45) and nights (19:30-07:45) with a 1 hour and 40 minute break. 3LDs/nights one week and 4LDs/nights the next. Students can work shorter days/earlys/lates if they wish as long as they are completing their stipulated working hours. This should be negotiated and agreed with their mentor. Students are expected to work nights and weekends during their placement.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Rhodes Place is an in-patient unit based in the community. Focus is on Rehabiliation and Recovery for women with serious and enduring mental health needs.

Patient care involves; managing of risk factors, planning and facilitating activities both on and off the unit, supporting patients with personal care, supporting patients to access community facilities, liaising with community health care providers to meet patients physical health needs.(GP, Podiatry, Asthma Nurse, Diabetes Nurse).

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Shift Coordination. Liasing/colloborating with MDT and other Health care providers. Involvement in handovers.

Womens Service development in progress. Productive Mental Health Ward process being undertaken.
