About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Introduction to ward with welcome booklet. Orientation to area. Health and safety aspects. Opportunity to meet staff and clients and negotiate learning objectives with assessor.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students encouraged to choose mentor. Assessor allocation fixed before commencement of placement.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Care of clients with advanced dementia. Full range of ADL including management of behavioural problems associated with organic syndromes.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
A hybrid of Orem and Roper which allows maximum flexibility of care planning with an emphasis on maintaining skill levels for the client.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Basic nursing care skills – feeding, toileting, bathing etc. Cognitive and behavioural approaches to the management of severe behavioural problems associated with dementia.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
What resources are available to help students learning?
Study area with PC access, also internet access. Learner packages covering many aspects of dementia care.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Recent changes to philosophy reflect the drive to find appropriate community placements for many of the “long stay” clients. Ward staff now developing a limited assessment role with the aide of a self designed assessment tool.
