About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will arrive on placement on their first morning and will be shown round by a member of the Team and introduced to appropriate staff and made to feel welcome.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students are allocated a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor within a District Nursing Team.

08.30 to 5pm across Monday – Friday.

No nights. However there is an evening service available for learners to access on a spoke. Flexible working is also in place and under negotiate a learner could do 8am- 6pm across 5 days. Weekends are negotiable.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Care of patients in their own home or Treatment Clinics Care of patients in Residential Care Homes, Neighbourhood Network Homes. Acute and non-acute medical and post-operative care Wide and varied range of wound care with extensive range of wound dressings.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Orem’s model of self care and also Roper, Logan and Tierney’s model based on the activities of daily living.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Bladder and bowel care, male and female urinary catheterisation, and administration of suppositories, enemas, rectal medication. Venepuncture, recording of blood pressure, diabetes management, and administration of insulin, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, administration of eye drops, creams, lotions, holistic assessments, and wound management (acute and chronic) using aseptic technique / infection control, including leg ulcers, and doppler assessments. Additionally, we provide palliative care, complex care, and support for long term health conditions, using the contact assessment process, care planning, implementation of care & evaluation, MDT teamwork and case conferences.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

All areas have resource information available for students, full internet access and also access to the main healthcare databases e.g. CINAHL, following input of a password and code.
