About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

The Integrated Contraception and Sexual Health Service believe in a person-centred approach to supporting all individuals in managing their contraception and sexual health needs. Every client will be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of age, gender, disability, marital status, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or residence.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All nursing staff are practice supervisors and we have 3 nurses who are practice assessors.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early: None

Late: 11.00-19.00 (Tuesday only)

Night: None

Day: 09.00-17.00

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

The service is free and confidential and aims to promote a healthy and safe sexual life for men and women of all ages and sexual orientation, including young people under 16 yrs. Services provided to clients are as follows; –

  • Free contraception:
    • Emergency contraception
    • Barrier methods- condoms, and caps/diaphragms
    • Contraceptive pills (combined and progesterone only)
    • Contraceptive patches
    • Injectable contraception (Depo Provera)
    • Implant
    • IUD and IUS (coils)
    • Natural family planning
    • Advice and referral for female and male sterilisation
  • Sexual Health
    • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
    • Blood tests for HIV, Syphilis, Hep B, Hep C
    • Post and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP/PrEP)
  • Young persons’ clinics
  • Cervical smear tests.
  • Pregnancy tests.
  • Preconceptual advice
  • Advice for unwanted pregnancy and onward referral for abortion or antenatal care.
  • Advice on reproductive and sexual health issues
    • Period problems
    • Fertility

What nursing model is used for planning care?

As we are a specialist service, we used proformas that use a health promotion model and holistic approach. Activities of daily living are touched upon in this.

Venepuncture
Intramuscular injection techniques
Motivational Interviewing and one-off counselling
Subdermal implants
Intrauterine devices/systems (coils)
Psychosexual consultations
Sexually transmitted injection management
Microscopy
Tests and sampling
Contact tracing.
