About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
The student will undergo orientation to the ward which includes introduction to the environment and staff. You will meet with your mentor and informed of PEL and ULL. You will receive a student handbook/welcome pack.
There are resources available for learning resources staff will be able to assist.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All students will be allocated a mentor/supervisor
The ward has regular night staff so is able to provide a mentor on night duty
Students have additional support from all ward staff, PEL, PEF and ULL
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early: 7.30-14.00
Late: 13.30-20.00
Night: 19.30-8.30
Long day 7.30-20.00
Notes: 30 mins break short days 60min long day as 2 breaks during day

Post-operative care
Pre-operative care

Emergency ENT admissions
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney nursing model
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Basic skill relating to communication, personal cleansing and dressing, bowel and bladder/elimination care, fluid and diet assessment and recording, mobilising, maintaining a safe environment. Nursing documentation including risk assessments
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Wound care
Removal of surgical drains/sutures and clips (stitches)
Urinary catheterisation of both male and female patients (exposure/not guaranteed)
Aseptic non touch technique (ANTT)
Blood glucose monitoring/documentation.
Cannula removal/VIP scores (assessing the site where the cannula enters the skin)
Clinical observations
Recording observations on Patientrack system
Pre-operative and post-operative surgical care
Tracheostomy care-tube changes/suction/stoma care and emergency care (exposure/not guaranteed)
Nebuliser therapy
Oxygen therapy
Discharge processes including referrals to a district services
Naso-gastric feeding
Online referrals to members of the Multi-disciplinary team.
POCT training blood glucose
What resources are available to help students learning?
Access to library services on site, student notice board specialist books locally on ward in staff room to access. Trust intranet/internet to access policies and procedures health and safety information and educational websites

YOU MUST ATTEND IN OWN CLOTHES AND CHANGE INTO UNIFORM AT PLACEMENT. IF WORKING ON WARD 12 IT IS A GREEN AREA AND YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND OTHER AREAS UNLESS THEY ARE GREEN IE THEATRE.
