About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Learners will work with their Practice Assessors or a Practice Supervisor.
The Practice Assessor is allocated to the learner prior to starting placement and can be identified on the learners PARE document.
When the learner contacts the PEL they will be sent a Student Welcome Pack and the contact details of their Practice Assessor. They can then contact their Practice Assessor to negotiate shift patterns. The learner should try to work with their Practice Assessor on their first shift. The Practice Assessor will introduce the learner to the environment and complete the Orientation part of the PARE document.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Learners will work with their Practice Assessors or a Practice Supervisor.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early shift is 7:30am to 15:30
Late shift is 12:30pm to 20:00
Long days are 7:30am to 20:00
Shift Notes:
Learners are not allowed to work 3 long days consecutively.
Learners must work 37.5 hours per week or if doing 3 long days then 36 hours with a makeup shift.
Learners do not have to work long days.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Diabetic patients; endocrinology patients; general medical patients.; patients suffering from dementia delirium e.g. due to a UTI.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Point of Care (Learners must attend glucose blood and urine testing training. Please contact the NEPEF.Team@nca.nhs.uk for further information.)
Urinalysis
Blood glucose and Ketone Testing
Cannulation and venepuncture.
Enhanced Patient Observation Training ( first year student nurses are not to be involved in patient observation activities)
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Complex discharge planning, working with the Multidisciplinary team.
Final year learners can spoke out to shadow the Lead Nurse.
Leadership experience.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Resource room, Computers, Teaching Sessions and access to members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
- Internet and Intranet access and also Wifi
- On site library
- Free hospital transport to allow students to attend spokes on other sites.
