About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Welcome, orientation to the ward, off duty, assigned mentor
Orientation booklet
Planned initial, midpoint and final interviews.
Spoke placements in stroke rehabilitation, Early supported discharge for stroke and
Stroke research nurses.
Exposure to full range of multidisciplinary team
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All students have a named mentor highlighted prior to commencement
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7. 30 am – 3. 30pm
Late:
12.30pm – 20.30pm
Night:
20.00pm – 08.00am
Shift Notes:
Longdays: 0730- 2030 (usual ward shift)
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Students will experience
-emergency assessment and treatment of stroke with thrombolysis
-hyper acute nursing
-acute nursing
Students can also explore
-stroke rehabilitation both in a hospital setting and the home setting
-nursing research within stroke
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Physiological observations and use of early warning score.
Neurological observations
Recognition of the deteriorating patient
Stroke assessment (NIHSS) recognition of stroke
Medication administration Inc. thrombolysis
Telemetry and close monitoring of thrombolysis
Standard Infection control precautions
Blood glucose monitoring
Risk assessments, nursing assessment.
5 lead ECG
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
NGT insertion, feeding, medication administration and care
PEG/PEJ feeding, medication administration and care
Aseptic non touch technique
Speech issues common in stroke and how to overcome these.
Urinary Catheterisation and catheter care
Oral Suction
Nutrition and fluid management
Pain management, identification, assessment, deliver and monitor appropriate interventions, physical, psychological and pharmaceutical.
12 lead ECG
Simple wound management.
End of life care
