About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Orientation and Welcome to the ward.

Introduction to the staff and area.

Being aware of who your assessor/supervisor are.

Initial interview to ensure PA or PS has acknowledged the student’s action plans/objectives

Off duty (the shifts you will be working are negotiated)

Possible spoke placements are discussed and how they work under Covid restrictions.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All students are allocated a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisors. The Practice Assessor will be identified on PARE.

Shift Notes:

Working with their Practice Supervisors and occasionally with their Practice Assessor. Usually long days, alternate weekends and night duty if indicated

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Respiratory patients including Covid 19.

Some patients with chest drains, tracheostomy, pneumonia, COPD. Patients who require 1.5 level care Bipap/CPAP.

End of life and palliative care

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

See care situations

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

High level nursing as above

What resources are available to help students learning?

Internet and Intranet access and also Wifi

On site library

Free hospital transport to allow students to attend spokes on other sites.

Interprofessional Teaching sessions

Path Lab Tours

Due to the Covid situation Path Lab Tours are suspended.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Covid studies.

Spoke Placements

Depending on the student year. MacMillan specialist team, lung cancer specialist nurse, other placements  All are discussed on initial interview and agreed if appropriate.

Additional Information

The Acute Respiratory Care Unit was located on Ward 8 but has now relocated to the old Ward 11b location.

Acute Respiratory Care Unit – All students must contact the area prior to starting on the learning environment. The student needs to ask about Covid requirements such as which masks are worn, if the student needs to be fit tested and which hospital entrance the student must use.
