What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Full tour of RMCH (ORC) including full tour of children’s theatre (anaesthetics and recovery)
Full explanation and demonstration of pain patient list on HIVE
Learners shown how to access our protocols and guidelines on the MFT intranet site

Initial interview with assessor

MFT Trust Induction (Completes yearly)

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

As we are a small team, we will rotate the role of supervisor/assessors. Learner will work closely with all members of the team.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early: 08:00am  – 16:00pm

Late: 10:00am – 18:00pm

Night: N/A

Days: Monday to Friday

Shift Notes: Learners can condense their full time hours over 4 days. If so they can do 8-6.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Undertake the daily patient ward round with a member of the children’s pain team.
Mobilising/repositioning patients
Administering medication
Procedural pain situations (distraction)

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Family cantered care adopting a holistic model

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

A to E assessment (to monitor for opiate/ local anaesthetic toxicity)
Observations
Medicine management

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Epidural observations (motor block and sensory testing)
Pump programming (under supervision)

What resources are available to help students learning?

Access to lots of books/journals regarding paediatric pain in our office

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Learner will be expected to complete a mini pain assessment audit and a poster regarding a pain topic of their choice.
Will assist the pain team in collecting data for their ongoing audits.
