About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are given a Welcome Book and a tour of the ward
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors are allocated two weeks prior to students commencing on the ward, however due to unforeseen circumstances a mentor may not be allocated until the day the student starts on placement
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.15am-3.15pm
Late:
1.15pm – 9.30pm
Night:
9pm – 7.30am
Shift Notes:
Students negotiate their own off duty with their mentor at the start of the week
Once the off duty is set it should be followed otherwise the mentor will report the student as being absent
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Patients have gastric problems but many also have complex medical problems
Documentation, admission and discharge planning are a large part of the skills required

Roper, Logan and Tierney

Passing Nasogastric Tubes
Cannulation

Urinary catheterisaion
