About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Your placement will be a Rochdale Day Surgery placement. If you are commencing your placement in THEATRES, you will experience the Day Surgery and Ednoscopy Unit as spoke placements.
Information regarding spoke placements will be given to you during your initial interview.
Students will be orientated to the department and introduced to their mentor/registrant.
Students will spend time in all areas of the department i.e. anaesthetics, scrub and recovery.
They will receive a welcome letter providing information relating to the placement.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors receive a letter prior to the student arriving in the department informing them of their students name, year group and dates of placement. Mentors/registrants will also receive a pack for the student.
Spoke placements are arranged for the student to Day Surgery and Endoscopy.
The mentor will inform the student of these dates.

The department is operational Monday to Friday. Students will work 37.5 hours a week over 4 days and have one day off. Each shift includes a 30 minute lunch break. Please note that there is no opportunity for students to work night shifts or weekends.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Students participate in the perioperative care of adults and children receiving sedation, local, general or spinal anaesthesia. Surgical specialities include general, vascular, plastics, gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics, oral, chronic pain procedures and opthalmic.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Pre Roper, Logan and Tierney
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Care of the unconscious patient, airway management, safety checks (WHO patient safety checks, COSHH regulations), Infection Control, ANTT procedure, aseptic technique, patient positioning, documentation, pain assessment, total patient care, pressure relief, patient assessment, Physiological observations, Hypothermia prevention, fluid balance, health promotion and DVT prevention.

What resources are available to help students learning?
Team members, the multi disciplinary team, introduction to theatres pack, seminar room, the trusts intranet and teaching packs for each speciality.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Infection control and prevention, the use of warming devices, site marking and correct site surgery.
Spoke Placements
All students will spend time in the Day Surgery and Endoscopy Unit.
Additional Information
If you are pregnant, please contact the University Placements Unit as soon as possible as you will not be accepted for a placement in this area.
All students are asked to contribute £4 per month towards beverage, toast etc.
Appropriate theatre clothing and shoes are provided (students will need to wear uniform on their spoke placements.
A locker is provided for safe keeping of your valuables.
Facilities are available to store and cook meals/snacks.

PROFESSIONAL AND ETHICAL DOMAIN
1; The NMC code in practice ,the principles of accurate time keeping, team work , professional boundaries , interaction with the multi-disciplinary team, participation in the WHO brief , participate in patient handovers as the patient transfers through each area of the department and the students ability to recognise own limitations.
2; Contribute to the care of patients, prioritise care activities and appropriate use of nursing interventions, using problem solving skills, manages safe keeping of patients records, respect clients right to confidentiality, recognises own abilities, the role of the 1st assistant, completion of theatre documentation, prioritising nursing interventions, observation of medicines management and the role of the student nurse as the patients advocate.
3; The student will have interaction with patients who experience learning difficulties considering equality against time management, identify communication difficulties, appropriate use of the interpreter and equality and diversity within the department , attendance at preoperative assessment clinics and follow the patient as they transfer through each area of the department.
CARE DELIVERY DOMAIN
4; Effective communication within the theatre environment, the WHO patient safety form, WHO brief / debrief , patient handovers, providing reassurance to patients in the immediate post operative period, engage, develop and disengage in therapeutic relationships , communication , theatre protocols and the use of verbal/ nonverbal methods of communication in each area of theatres and patient care planning.
5; Health promotion for the surgical patient , a spoke placement to the pre operative assessment unit ,fluid management in day case surgery which includes fluid preparation using ANNT, pain assessment /management and measuring and responding to changes physiological parameters.
6; Undertake an accurate and systemic nursing assessment of a patient in each area of the department , complete accurate records as per trust policy, attend pre op assessment clinics , participate in handover as the patient transfers through each area of theatre (verbal and written) maintaining patient confidentiality and prioritising nursing interventions.
7; Completion of patients care plans, discussions on the nurses role in informed consent , and the role of the student as a member of the multidisciplinary team
8; Opportunities are available for the student to apply knowledge and skills caring for patients completing the care plan as appropriate, perform practical skills e.g. airway management, pre op assessment, assist in completion of safety checks, ANNT , aseptic technique , care of the unconscious patient, decontamination/ sterilisation of equipment , patient positioning, pain assessment, patient transfer, numeracy, pressure area care ,DVT prophylaxis, care of cannulas and care of the patient with an intravenous infusion , pre/post op observations and accurately completing documentation.
9; Complete nursing assessments for patients undergoing day surgery, evaluation of nursing care , patient handovers as the patient transfers through each area of theatre and perform clinical and practical skills.
10; Opportunities are available for the student to complete care plans, observation charts and fluid balance charts in line with trust policy.
11; Students will be able to record vital signs, complete care plans, assist in the prevention of pressure sores, and liaise with members of the MDT.A spoke placement into pre op. assessment will enable the student to assist in care delivery within the MDT. Prioritising nursing interventions in each area of theatres.
CARE MANAGEMENT DOMAIN
12; Maintaining a safe environment (hand washing, infection control, health and safety procedures, completing care plans). Administration of oxygen in the perioperative environment. Prioritising nursing interventions. The use of risk management strategies.
13; The student will attend a spoke placement to the pre operative assessment unit. Quality assurance within the trust. Opportunities are available to gain experience in all areas of theatres. Participation in all patient care.
14; The role of the student in the MDT. Team dynamics within theatres. The delegation of duties to team members from the team leader. Care delivery across the MDT.
15; The student will have opportunities to complete documentation (care plan etc.). Patient handovers in each area of theatres. Discussions with mentors re; the trusts guidelines for completion of documentation. The use of the theatre information system.
16; The interpretation of data when performing swab checks, completing drug checks, recording vital signs and measurement of blood sugars. The use of audit.
17; Opportunities are available for the student to access the intranet for trust policies and use the theatre information management system under supervision.
18; Professional accountability and patient advocacy in all areas of theatres. Opportunities are available to discuss situations that may require problem solving skills. Examples include patient positioning, consent, failed intubation and cardiac arrest.
PERSONAL / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
19; Continual professional development of staff. The role of the student in the department. PDR . Reflection. Completion of SWOT analysis and identification of areas for development at initial interview. Discussion re; changes in self as their training has progressed. Discussions on preceptorship.
