About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
A student Information leaflet is given to all students to orientate themselves to the unit and the MDT Students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor before commencement of first duty and invited to visit the unit.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
The unit operates 3 mentorship teams, the team leaders are : Sr R Bogg, Sr. S Molyneux and Staff nurse S Foster. Students will be allocated a mentorship team, which will facilitate and supervise learning in the placement area. Off duty will be organised in order to allow students to work with mentors. To ensure that your assessment is both fair and thorough the mentorship team with discuss your progress and then give feedback.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.15 – 15.15
Late:
13.00 – 21.00
Night:
20.30 – 07.30
Shift Notes:
Some mentors choose to work long days (07:15 – 20:45), Student may be allowed to follow this shift pattern with their mentors if they so wish after assessment and discussion with mentors. It must be remembered that these shifts can be tiring and put added pressure on students. Students cannot choose to work long days if their mentor works 7.5 hours per day.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
The Floyd Unit cares for patients following brain injury in the rehabilitation phase. Patients on the unit may present with the following conditions which have caused skull and/or brain injury: Traumatic skull deformity and brain injury following road traffic accidentsMultiple Sclerosis Complex Cere bral Vascular Accidents Guillian Barrie Syndrome Medical Spinal injuries Low Awareness patients Patients with permanent Tracheotomy All staff need to be aware that as a result of brain injury, patients can experience problems with behaviour adjustments. Patients can therefore display unpredictable and sometimes aggressive or inappropriate behaviour. Staff on the unit will discuss this aspect of patient care with students to ensure safety is maintained.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The unit uses an adapted version of Roper, Logan and Tierneys activities of daily living. The Northwick park dependency scale (NPDS) and care needs assessment tool are used also to determine depenancy levels of patients.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
There is an opportunity whilst on the unit to learn and demonstrate core clinical skills in accordance with the NMC Essential Core Clusters.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Use of specialist equipment for the safe moving and handling of patients, positioning of neuro rehab patients. Students may be lucky enough to observe SMART patient testing – assessment of low awareness patients.
What resources are available to help students learning?
There is a dedicated Student notice board, with articles of interest that unit staff and previous students have contributed. There is a computer area for students to use.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The Unit is currently undertaking audit processes regarding the care pathway introduced to the unit in 2009, this audit examines time from referral to admission, length of stay and outcomes of patients once they are admitted. The unit is also part of the productive ward initiative introduced by the trust. There are also ad hoc sessions held on the unit from outside sources ie drug companies, Fresenius, wound care agencies to ensure staff are up to date with the latest developments in these areas.
Spoke Placements
Sessions are arranged on the unit for students to spend some of their placement working alongside Physiotherapy staff, Occupational therapists, and to attend one of the neuro rehab outpatients clinics. Work is being carried out at the moment to provide a spoke placement on the Pennine Care mental health unit which is close by.
