About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will meet with their mentor on the first day and be orientated to the ward. There is a student pack to complete. They will discuss their shift patterns and learning outcomes in the first week and work 40% of the time with their mentor.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
There are currently two mentors on the unit who will manage one student each.

Here on Horizon we work a long day shift pattern over days and nights.
Long days: 07:15- 19:30
Twilight: 12:00- 00:00
Night :19:15- 07:30
4 days one week and 3 the next week.
There is room for negotiation and earlies and lates can be discussed.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Horizon unit is a long term therapeutic environment which looks to provide care for long term needs for young people, such as eating disorders, Psychosis long term self harmers and young people with learning needs, emerging personality dis-orders.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
We have eating disorder pathways, we are currently introducing my shared pathway, and we work with the recovery model.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Networking with community teams and services
- A chance to work within CPA Ward rounds
- Working within the MHA
What resources are available to help students learning?
We have several resources on the ward, such as books, access to the intranet, resource centre which can be accessed by all students
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
We have no formal research projects at present but always work on areas to improve.
Currently we are part of QNIC (Quality networks for inpatient CAMHS). This is a service that helps us meet with other professionals which allows involvement with peer reviews where we assess other inpatient CAMHS services. As part of this we are currently part of a project called Your Welcome.

We have several spoke placements that include Community CAMHS, Inreach/Outreach Services, EIT, Mental Health Law Offices, Streetwise in Bury, Early Breaks
