About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students are encouraged to contact the department before their placement begins to arrange agreed starting date and time.

Students will meet with their Mentor on the first day of their placement, or if not possible within 2 days of commencement.

Allocated time to discuss learning outcomes and learning opportunities.

Introduction to the team and orientation to the building including fire procedures and health & safety.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

1x Practice Assessor

Supervisors are allocated on a rotational basis although we operate a team mentorship model.

Monday to Friday. Usually 9am to 5pm depending on patient needs and mentor working patterns.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Students will be able to gain experience of observing and being involved in nursing interventions.

Undertaking mental health needs assessments.

Liaison with other primary care service, secondary care and third sector services throughout the North West.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The team provide brief interventions which offer a wide range of psychological, practical and supportive interventions for clients.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Clear and concise communication skills.

Liaison with other professionals internally and externally across the North West.

Accurate recording of clinical notes.

Assessment of Military Veterans presenting with mild to moderate mental health problems.

Completion of risk assessments and management plans.

Psycho-social interventions, signposting.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Brief intervention therapies with common mental illness.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Staff with varied experience and background.

Intranet/internet access via IT department.

Library access at Fairfield General Hospital.

Library of books in house.

Team specific safeguarding supervision.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Research studies in Stabilisation work in PTSD Word on experience of British Veterans.

Spoke Placements

Spoke placements/exposure available with other members of TILS or MVS.

Numerous spoke placements available outside the service both veterans specific and non-veteran specific with our partner agencies.

The NW Veterans Transition, Interventions & Liaison Service is a dedicated local-community-based service for veterans and those transitioning out of the armed forces with a discharge date (within 6 months). TILS is a single point of access for military veterans’ mental health support across England. Pennine Care provides this service across the North West of England, including Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside. The team consists of Mental Health nurses, Social Workers, and a Dual-Diagnosis nurse. A number of our staff have previously served in the Armed Forces or are from within the wider Armed Forces Community.
