About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
·Allocated Named Assessor/Supervisor
·Initial. Mid-Point , Final Point meetings booked on first Assessor / student induction
·Orientation pack
·Allocated student room with intranet access available
·Induction to environment, health and safety inductioncompleted on first day .
·Students will be supernumerary and will based betweenHITS and CHLS .
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Assessor / Supervisor rotas in place.
Assessor/Supervisor have completed the relevant training
HITS / CHLS have access to a sign off mentor for 3rdyear final semester students.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
HITS/CHLS covers a 7 day week
08:00 – 18:00 – Monday to Sunday
- Students will be expected to work 2 weekends in 4 as per their mentors shifts.
- Shift patterns can be discussed with the allocated mentor where flexibility is required.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
HITS support patients suffering from a mental health crisis in their own home to avoid a Hospital admission.
HITS facilitate early discharge/leave from the inpatient ward and support patients at home for up to 6 weeks following discharge.
CHLS (Outreach) Support patients in 24 hour care in care homes where the staff need support to manage behaviours which they find challenging.
CHLS (Outreach) Facilitate leave and support patients for up to 6 weeks following discharge from the inpatient ward to ensure a continuity of care once in 24 hour placement.
Both HITS and CHLS complete gatekeeping to reduce inappropriate admissions to the ward and support patients in the community as an alternative to an inpatient admission.

- Comprehensive Handover of patient need, Presentation to other professional agencies and the MDT.

- End of Life Advice (CHLS).
- Staff Education (CHLS).
- Life Story Work.
- Dementia Care Mapping (CHLS).
What resources are available to help students learning?
Spoke Placements
- Beech Ward – Inpatient Ward (nights can be discussed for 2nd and 3rd year students only)
- Memory Clinic
- Occupational Therapist based on Beech Ward (1 day only)
- MERIT (CMHT)
Note: Students are encouraged to source appropriate relevant Spoke Placements in agreement with their Assessor/Supervisor.
