About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Information induction and orientation package which includes explanation of the function of Hollingworth Ward and introduction to the ward philosophy, fire procedure and policy, uniform, personal safety and orientation to staff and team.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors and Associate Mentors are arranged by PEL prior to students commencing placement.
Once identified the student and mentor will have the opportunity to meet and discuss times and dates to complete assessments and documentation etc.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.30 am – 2.30 pm
Late:
1.30 pm – 9 45 pm
Night:
9.30 pm – 7.45 am
Shift Notes:
Students may also be asked to do 9-5 or 10-6
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
All aspects of care associated with assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating care.
Hollingworth Ward is a sixteen bedded, mixed acute admission assessment and 1st phase treatment ward for all service users who require assessment in a 24hr safe environment.
Hollingworth Ward is also the identified place of safety for those detained under section 136/135 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
The majority of service users will be admitted to this ward for initial assessment this assessment will take the form of intensive engagement and will include formal assessments such as the brief psychiatric rating scale and the KGV as well as the Pennine Care Risk Assessment.
The aim of this service model is that service users will remain on this ward for a maximum of 7 days if after this period they require ongoing inpatient care they will be transferred to our sister ward, Morrside Ward.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Initial assessment and interviewing skills
- Observational skills of physical health such as measuring blood pressure, temperature pulse, BM’s respiration etc
- Rick assessment and dealing with violence and aggression
- Involvement in MDT decision making
- Management experience
- Administration of medication including depots and rapid tranquilisation
- Opportunity to follow Patient Care Pathways i.e. ECT
- Nursing clients away from others in extra care suite.

What resources are available to help students learning?
All qualified staff have particular interests in various parts of mental health nursing and will enjoy discussing their spheres with you.
We also have nursing assistants undertaking their NVQ’s STR workers and trainee advanced practitioners they are all valuable sources of information that you can utilize to gain insight into inpatient mental health nursing.
Also available is a student room with up to date text books, journals, literature and internet6 access.
Within the student room there are teaching session dates displayed that are held in the Trust and other relevant information or students to access.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Spoke Placements
Spoke placements are to be arranged by the students following discussion with their Mentor. A list of possible spoke placements relevant to this practice are is included in the induction pack.

Staff on Hollingworth Ward will work together with patients who experience problems with their mental health using an evidence based practice approach. The care given will be stepping stone or ensuring a commitment to enable and promote social inclusion.
