What are the arrangements for assessors?

A number of assessors and supervisors identified on student noticeboard/ in welcome booklet. Assessor to be allocated prior to placement commencing where possible.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

The MH team work 8am-4pm across the 7 days

The Primary Care Team work 7.30am- 7.45pm for 3 days one week and 4 days the following week on rotation. There is some flexibility and an option to work night shifts

What nursing model is used for planning care?

The philosophy of care is service user focused, non- discriminatory & based on effective multi- agency input

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

As part of the MH In-Reach team, learners will be encouraged to develop a collaborative approach, placing the needs of the service users who have severe & enduring mental illness at the centre of planning care. The aim of the team is to ensure that service users are given the highest standard of care, which is non-judgemental, service user centred & evidence based.

The Primary Care team provide healthcare services to prisoners and the learner will be actively encouraged to participate in all aspects of care

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

The MH service aims to support other disciplines by effecting timely assessment & care provision to service users that present with mental health needs. The team also provides liaison, consultation, support, & expert advice to other professionals & agencies involved in the ongoing care & treatment of mentally ill offenders through the Care Programme Approach.

As part of the PCT, you will deliver/ contribute to the delivery of a wide range of clinical interventions including wound care, assessment and treatment of chronic illness, medicines management, physical health monitoring.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

  • Provision of Mental Health Awareness training for all disciplines of staff within the prison in order to develop skills & competence when dealing with prisoners who may be experiencing mental health problems.
  • Development & implementation of the Clinical Governance Framework Compliance with NSF & NICE guidelines
  • Ensuring that effective clinical audit process is implemented
  • Development of outcome measures.

Additional information

Garth Prison accepts category B prisoners serving sentences of four years or more. Garth holds 800 male prisoners mostly convicted of serious violent or sexual offences.

Learners may not be given keys for security reasons during their placement. if this is the case, they will always be under direct supervision of a directly employed member of Staff. The learner will remain supernumerary for the duration of their placement.
