About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
This placement is now part of the Synergy Project commencing September 2017.

Also please find attached the Student Welcome Pack.
In order to ensure that you get the most from your induction/orientation period & also to help you feel more welcome/less nervous on commencement of placement, we are quite happy for students to visit our placement area prior to commencing placement, to have a “look around”, meet the staff & pick up welcome packs. This is not essential,however, if you would like this, please either email me (Kim Ashcroft, PEL) or ring me on 01204 390315 & I will arrange this to coincide with when your mentor is on shift.
For all students, if you can try to email me 2-3 weeks before your placement commences, I will send you placement, mentor & off duty/shift information.
In all instances, we aim to complete your orientation within the first 24 hours of placement commencement. Can students ensure that this is recorded on the induction form on our studen board as well as in your assessment booklet.
We also aim to complete your initial assessment within the first 24 hours of placement commencement. (If,for any reason, this does not occur, can you please make me aware & I will ensure that this is completed). At this meeting, your mentor will discuss your learning outcome needs & action plan from these in order to structure your learning/placement journey. Learning opportunities & spoke opportunities will be discussed (and are included in our welcome pack) relevant to your stage of training. We will also utilise the Trust/University PAD document to ensure that you get the very best from your time with us. Dates for your midpoint& final assessments should also be set at this initial meeting. Can students please ensure that they are well prepared for their initial meeting to allow us to aid you in achieving your goals more effectively; bringing all relevant paperwork & assessments.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student is allocated a mentor & must work at least40% of their placement with their mentor. We realise that students have lives/pressures outside of placement &we try to incorporate these needs as best as possible & be as flexible aswe can, however, please ensure that you work the required practice hours, therequired hours with your mentor & the required numbers of weekends/nightsetc, as these are vital to ensuring that you meet course requirements.
Please ensure thatyour off duty is documented each week in the relevant section of the off duty& that the relevant section of your assessment document is completed byyour mentor/appropriate member of staff after each shift
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.30am – 3.00pm
Late:
12.00pm – 20.00pm
Night:
17.30pm – 08.00am
Shift Notes:
Shift patterns are at the discretion of the placement manager/ Practice educational lead for each placement and will depend on the needs of the placement to enable effective student support using the Synergy approach.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Ward G3 is an 11 bedded predominantly male orthopaedic traumaward catering for patients age 16 years & upwards. We take emergencyadmissions from A&E, plaster room & also GP referrals. We may also take elective/list patients;& medical & surgical outliers.
Trauma Stabilisation Unit (TSU): We have 2 TraumaStabilisation Units each with 6 beds (1 male bay & 1 female bay). TSU provides early nursing care for our mostvulnerable patients, for example hipfracture patients. It benefits fromhaving an orthogeriatrician review of patients on week days & a slightlyhigher staffing level. This is not astep up in care but aims to optimise & stabilise the care of vulnerableadults at ward level.
We encourage students to follow the whole patient journey from admission to discharge/transfer, pre, peri & post-operative care; aspects of rehabilitation; palliative care

Roper, Logan & Tierney’s 12 Activities of Daily Living (12 ADLS)
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Essential Nursing skills: attending to personal hygiene needs, bed bathing, bed making, oral hygiene requirements, eye care, continence issues (bowel & bladder care), mobility issues (moving & handling), nutrition, infection control & pressure area care issues/management, privacy & dignity issues (to name a few)
- Nursing Admissions & all aspects of the nursing process
- Care Planning
- Risk Assessing
- Pain Management
- Administration of medications
- Taking specimens, for example, urine (MSU & CSUs)
- MRSA swabbing & treatment
- Pre & post operative care requirements/management
- Early Warning Score (EWS); taking vital signs/Acute Illness Management & Sepsis Six steps utilised

- Handovers/ward rounds

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
We are currently devising a student journey workbook for first year students & are hoping to extend this to second & third year students following the trial/success of this.
All members of staff are link nurses for specific areas in practice, for example, nutrition, tissue viability, infection control, pain etc. They attend regular updates, teaching sessions etc in regards to their own areas & update the rest of the team on the latest developments in that field & drive standards for these areas.
Members of our team are undertaking various degrees/ in-house development programmes Regular audits are carried out, for example nursing care indicators, key performance indicators, CQUINs, Best Practice Indicators ie for hip fractures
We are part of the Exemplar Programme within the Trust.
We encourage students to evaluate our area/practice, we have various tools for doing this; questionnaires, a student evaluation book, encouragement to feedback on practice on a daily basis. We are going to be trialling SurveyMonkey as a means of placement feedback shortly also
Spoke Placements
Plaster room/Orthopaedic Outpatients/Fracture Clinic (Book as a day rotating around this area) this may also offer opportunities to reflect on a wide range of individuals for exposure to branches ie vulnerable adults, children, learning disabilities
Theatre (please ensure that you have completed your theatre induction before booking onto a day in theatre. If you have not completed; ask staff to arrange this for you as soon into your placement as possible-theatre induction dates may have a wait) THIS IS ONLY AN OPTION FOR YEAR 1 SEMESTER 3 STUDENTS ONWARDS
