About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Learners are advised to contact prior to commencing placement. Where the learners will be provided with the shift patterns.
On arrival to the unit the learners will be welcomed and given an orientation to the unit on the first day, a welcome book will be given and access to the Trust intranet will be given along with additional learning resources the team have collated. A student notice board will display information for learners and the unit also welcome learners to contribute to the development of this as a measure to continually improve.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
The PEL ‘s with liaise with the university and will make arrangement for new learners prior to commencing the placement. Staff will be notified verbally and written when learner have been assigned with clear instruction to the role they take. The unit has ample duel role and this will be rotated to ensure inclusivity.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Pioneer Ward gives student nurses the opportunity to care for patients having general surgery, urological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, maxilla-facial surgery, vascular surgery, trauma cases
Admit and prepare for theatre.
Recover patients from GA
Wound care and opportunities to participate in ANTT
To follow post- operative instructions, arranging follow up care, community wound care referrals.
To assess post-operative pain and nausea, to administer therapies under supervision.
Hydration, nutrition.
To assess for post-operative complication and be aware of Escalation protocols relating to deteriorating patient.
Infection Control, ethical issues relating to capacity and consent.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?
The students on the Pioneer Ward can learn:
- Pre and post-operative assessment of patients’ vital signs and observations, assessment of nursing needs, documentation using Integrated Care Pathway
- Application of long support stockings, supervised in doing subcutaneous injections, intramuscular injections
- Communication Skills, IT skills and Team Working
- To continually practice within NMC guidelines
- Communication skills to assess, psychological support, patient education, liaison with the MDT.
- ANTT and wound care
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Admissions on Evolve
- IT Trend care, patient centre.
- Medicines management/preparing TTOs
- Following NICE guidelines and British Association of Day Surgery protocols to ensure safety of all patients undergoing day surgery.
- To continually practice within NMC guidelines
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Nutritional assessment, falls risk, mobility, pressure area risk assessment, VTE documentation, exposure to clients with learning disability and mental health conditions.
What resources are available to help students learning?

– Resource file on ward, guides to various day surgical procedures and guided questions to prompt learning
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
- Developing in-patient pathway through Day Surgery to beds for overnight stay.
- Audits regarding post-operative pains, nausea, & vomiting

Additional Information
All staff on the Pioneer Ward aim to work focusing on the Northern Care Alliance work values: Patient and people focus, Accountability, Continuous improvement and Respect.
Teamwork is the key for all staff and has a good working relationship, friendly and helpful. All staff are motivated and supported by their Ward Manager and Clinical Matron and are expected to work alongside the Trust’s standards.
Everybody is expected / encouraged to practice Infection Control, always do handwashing, wearing face masks and from time to time do risk assessments when needed.
A student notice board is always upgraded for students where they can read/update some information e.g. uniform policy, Placement Charter, Guidance for Learners and Placement Educators and some vital information which could assist students in their DSU placement.
