About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Experience of multiagency practice in the community. We are a team comprising of Nurses ,Social Workers, Psychologists, CBT therapist, Support worker we also have our own Consultant Psychiatrist and associated Junior Medical staff.

We also have a Mentally Disordered Offender – M .D. O / E.I.S post. The nurse/ social worker in post has a specific role in assessment and support of those with Mental Health problems known to and or presenting to the Criminal Justice System.

We accept referrals from Inpatient Services, Single Point of Entry, Primary Care and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. The student has the opportunity to follow the path way of care both into and out of the service.

Insight to therapeutic work in the patients home.

Exposure to the importance of Family work within the Framework of the PSI model of care.

To gain an understanding of various assessments tool and see their use in daily practice.

Various spoke placements with an emphasis on exposure to young peoples services both statuary and non statuary.

Community team, weekends or nights not available. Dress: Smart casual. We do wear Jeans on placement but use our discretion in dress when attending formal meetings, court etc with our patients.

Inpatient settings, community settings, prison, probation, supported services.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Focus on the recovery model utilising an assertive approach and social inclusion techniques. Guided by the CPA.

Limited recourses but access to the Web is good.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

ReCAP study – Manchester University – Rethinking Choices After Psychosis – examines the benefits of motivational interviewing and CBT therapy ( MiCBT) ,in additional to usual care of people who sometimes use cannabis and have experienced first episode of psychosis.

imPaCT – Improving Participation in Cognitive Therapy – a randomised controlled trail of cognitive remediation, an intervention to improve neuropsychological functioning. Hopes that improving concentration, memory and planning before a course of cognitive Behavioural Therapy will improve its outcome.
