What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

  1. Each student is allocated an E Grade Staff Nurse Mentor.
  2. Also an Assessor.
  3. Initial interviews on first day of placement with Assessor.
  4. Will follow Mentors off duty as much as possible.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

6pm – 12 pm x 5 evenings per week.

DUE TO LATE NIGHT FINISH TIMES STUDENTS ON THIS PLACEMENT MUST HAVE ACCESS TO SAFE TRANSPORT HOME.

Directed study during day hours.

You will also be required to attend clinics and complete directed study to bring your hours up to full time.

  • Palliative care
  • Terminal care
  • Urology – catherisation – male/female and suprapubic
  • Diabetic care
  • Wound care – home & clinic
  • P-E-G feeds
  • Patient planning meetings

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Oren and Roper.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Catherisation, male/female, suprapubic catheters
  • Injections
  • Syringe driver – setting up
  • Setting up and taking down PEG feeds
  • Administration of medication via PEG
  • Eye medication administration
  • Wound management/aseptic technique
  • Central line flushes following chemotherapy
  • Complex care need assessments

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

  • IV training for trained staff
  • Continence training

DUE TO LATE NIGHT FINISH TIMES STUDENTS ON THIS PLACEMENT MUST HAVE ACCESS TO SAFE TRANSPORT HOME.
